The self checkout is a personal pet peeve of mine. If you have $100 worth of groceries, please don’t use the self checkout. If you have produce with no barcode, please don’t use the self checkout. If you don’t understand technology AT ALL, please don’t use the self checkout. There are trained, professional cashiers willing to help you check out in a timely manner. Please go to them. EVERYONE will be happier.
I’ll add another to that: If you have small children who insist on helping, please don’t use the self checkout (and I have young children who like to help, but I won’t let them if there are people behind us)
I’ll take my speed and correct bagging over standing there doing nothing except trying not to laugh or retch at the STAR, et al, or watching to make sure they don’t put the avocados on the bottom of the bag.
Local Stop and Shop not only has about 6 self check outs with one or two attendants to help if something doesn’t scan or a coupon won’t scan, it also has a self bagging system. You get a scanner when you enter and scan your groceries and bag them as you go. Then when you get to the self check out you scan the scanner and your card, scan your coupons, scan an icon to get credits for bags you bring from home, and get out really fast. I can bring my cooler and pack frozen stuff as I shop, and make sure the bag of potatoes is not on top of the bread. The store employees are busy restocking shelves and working the deli counter. The store is also kept very clean. Nicest thing is the scanner keeps a running total so you can stay in your budget if you are low that week.

I agree. I usually let my children bag the little bit of groceries as long as there’s no eggs or bread.

A thing that cheeses me off is at Wal-Mart the express lane is “20 items or less”. For me 20 items is a week’s shopping.

Well, it doesn’t help things that I have limited use of my left arm which makes thengs like checking myself out more difficult.
