    I had the opposite impression, that the peach had already aged too much and had shriveled up.

    Nope, that’s a peach stone (seed). You’ll have to fight the critters for them, though, once the tree gets big enough.

    Not very hard, though – at least, not the pits. Peach pits contain a cyanide compound, enough of it to kill many small critters. Or even small children – don’t allow your kids to eat peach pits!
    The critters know better, themselves, mostly.
