That’s precisely the problem. Greg Abbott firmly believes it is his business.

What in the world did he say now, to inspire this cartoon?

Boise Ed: It could be any number of quotes, but the most likely recent one is: “Because same-sex relationships do not naturally produce children, recognizing same-sex marriage does not further these goals to the same extent that recognizing opposite-sex marriage does….That is enough to supply a rational basis for Texas’ marriage laws.” [Brief to the 5th circuit court regarding Texas law on the matter.] This argument has been rejected over thirty times nationwide at the trial or appellate level, but he has unlimited state taxpayer money to continue, and the 5th, a bastion of civil rights in the 1950-60s period, it totally Reich-wing now. Besides, he is running for governor and it helps “rally the base” against Wendy Davis (D) and Brandon Parmer (G).
    .
Of course, strangely, his argument is not sufficient to ban heterosexual marriage when the parties are too old or otherwise sterile, nor does it mandate divorce if this inability is discovered after marriage, nor prevent adoption in such cases.

It’s homophobia, pure and simple. Where were the Christian and Catholic protests when Britney Spears was married for less than a day? Right, there were none.
    .
The right-wing theocrats can get back to me about “protecting the sanctity of marriage” when divorce is limited to the state execution of a spouse. " ’Till death do you part" and all that.

I’m glad to see that Iowa does not have a lock on having ALL the totally INSANE Republicans in their Government!

Seriously, can ANYONE explain to me how legalizing Same-Sex Marriage can have ONE IOTA of difference in the birth rate in a state?
Do those Homophobes REALLY believe that if they ban SSM, then Gays and Lesbians are going to say; “Well, I guess I can’t Marry the partner of my choice, so I guess I better Marry someone I’m not really interested in, and start banging out babies.”??
    SERIOUSLY??
    THAT’S THEIR ARGUMENT?
Dear God, how can ANYONE with an I.Q. higher then that of a Kumquat REALLY believe that

Sure. Greg Abbott can tell you, and has told you. It just won’t make a bit of sense. Just like the conservative positions on the economy, the environment, justice, women’s rights, voting rights, and pretty much anything they talk about. These people simply do not live in 21st century America.

No, he’s desperately trying to find a quasi-legitimate rational to stop guys from getting married to other guys. He failed.

Jase99: Personally, I felt that a citation of a state attorney general’s brief to a US Circuit Court of Appeals was a bit stronger that a quote from the Dalla Snooze. Are you aware of how often that rag manages to be accurate in anything? You actually caught an incident in which both sources actually agree.

So show the citation and make your case. I will warn you the whole “legal marriage is for procreation” argument falls apart real quick. I know two hetro married couples who have no intention of ever having kids and one gay couple who have two kids.

    .
I honestly think homophobes don’t think that far, since from a Christian biblical sense that bible says nothing about a non church legal gay marriage because what is the business of the state has no relevance to the business of the church unless it restricts worship (which a legally binding same sex marriage would not). In short they find it “icky”.

In the Great White North, we had a time when the Catholic church harassed us into making as many french-canadian catholic babies as possible, the early 20th century. We called it “La Grande noirceur” (The Great darkness). As you can imagine, we’ve been there and we don’t want to go back.

Sanctity of marriage, sanctity of marriage…have you seen the Bachelor/ette? Marriage is a competition! Have you seen how many couple divorced because of money problems, after they spent tens of thousands of dollars on just a ceremony?
