I’ve got an idea! How about we abolish the death penalty, but send to, any pay these countries to house our brutal murderers in their prisons?

Considering the fact it costs more then $28,000 PER YEAR PER PRISONER to keep people in Federal Facilities, expediting executions after all reasonable appeals are exhausted makes a LOT of economic sense!
Of course, someone needs to figure out that keeping people locked up for 5-10 years for a minimal possession charge for some pot is insane, as well as expensive!

First off, how about deciding what we expect the penal system to do? I hear the Righties saying that it takes the bad guys off the street…and when they come back on, they’ve learned a few more tricks…so what have we accomplished? Certainly not reform (which is the fiction we promote to justify incarcerating an inordinate number of our citizens…compare with other supposedly civilized nations…we don’t look so civilized). And as far as I can determine, we are the only supposedly advanced nation that routinely executes our own citizens…again classified as “punishment”, but just what in fact does it do? It certainly doesn’t teach the offender a lesson, if that is supposed to be the use of punishment…he’s dead and beyond any lessons. Data seems to indicate that it is also not an effective deterrent lesson to others, and looking from a psychological point of view, this is not a surprising result. And then there are the conditions of incarceration. Some say that at least the person is still alive…yes, but if he/she is in prolonged solitary confinement, what you have done is create case of torture for that individual. We are, in fact, presently torturing 10’s of thousands of people this way. And even if you say that we are supporting the person so that he/she doesn’t have to worry about where h the next meal or the roof over the head is coming from, you are leaving out the very important role of self-determination that most all of us have. I have never been in prison, but I have a good enough imagination to see how destructive to one’s self this is. You libertarians types should see this clearly, as you are always demanding liberty. Are you willing to do what is necessary to increase the number of your fellow citizens access to this liberty? The path is through education and the effort of the society as a whole to make sure that every child has the chance to achieve the top of his/her ability, regardless of the chance of birth and resources to develop. The current reduction in violent crime rate is probably due in part at least to more kids having better opportunities in the last 30 years. Think about it…we could do it if we’d only see people (particularly kids) as the source of our success as a nation.

Your first sentence is most pertinent. We have 50 states with differing attitudes and systems, and currently, an untrustworthy SCOTUS. Is this one of those problems that are “unsolvable”?
By the way, martens, have you seen the movie, or read the book CLOCKWORK ORANGE?

I’m getting tired of posting this:
The issue around the death penalty, as someone has already noted, is about OUR morals, not those of the criminal.
Saying “he did something horrible, so we get to do something horrible to him” is not a logical statement. Horrible is horrible.
But there are MANY reasons to eliminate the death penalty, ranging from the moral to the practical:
First of all: killing is killing, whether done through a government or by an individual. I should think conservatives should object to government killing.
Second: torturing someone to death says more about us than about them. Hardly a civilized approach to crime.
Third: for those here who claim a Christian background, it’s pretty clear that the person who said “love your enemy” and went through capital punishment on our behalf would not approve of it today. (TRUE right-to-life advocates oppose the death penalty as well as abortion and euthanasia.)
Fourth: continuing on Christian mores, there is no limit to the power of God to forgive. Redemption is always possible.
Fifth, as I note above, it is more expensive to execute than to imprison for life. The death penalty is impractical!
Sixth: look at the company we keep. We are the only G7 country that executes. We are fifth on the list of “most executions,” with China at #1, Iran, Saudi Arabia, and Iraq just ahead, with Pakistan, Yemen, North Korea, Vietnam, and Libya following. These are not models for a modern society.
Seventh: The Founders believed in Blackstone’s formulation that it is better to let guilty go free than to convict an innocent man. Franklin put it that: “it is better one hundred guilty Persons should escape than that one innocent Person should suffer.” Adams agreed. When death is on the line, shouldn’t we? Given that, as noted above, 4% of convictions appear to be wrong?
I don’t think there’s a lot to be said for the death penalty.

if it’s good enough for the sharia guys, it’s good enough for us. i’m told they recommend a sword to the neck. pretty effective if the guy wielding the sword knows what he’s doing. and our sword wielders have plenty of al qaeda and taliban videos to guide them.
