    Only women can get pregnant. Only women can know the internal pain of determining what to do about an unwanted pregnancy. Why do men feel that they are better qualified to make women’s decisions?

    I am willing to trust women to come up with reasonable laws regarding abortion, as they can see the problem for what it is. Men can only see the problem they wish to see.

    Women should take over the government.

    @Molon Labe

    I have never called anyone a racist.

    I never said anything about killing children.

    Otherwise, you understood my point entirely.

    1. It’s not a baby. A baby is the thing which has a nervous system, a possibility of perception and awareness, an identity. Before there is a functional nervous system, no perception of pain can exist, no awareness can exist, and no identity really exists (and before you pull out the “genetic identity” card, remember that the placenta has precisely the same genetic identity as the fetus).

    2. You are repeating anti-abortion myths not borne out by reality. Medically regulated legal abortions have fewer health complications than childbirth, do not leave women psychologically damaged, and have absolutely no link to breast cancer. Repeating myths does not make them true, and if you have to support your argument with myths, then there is something wrong with your argument.

    3. It isn’t the KKK which drives the rate of abortion in black women. What do you think happens, do you think they kidnap black women and drive them to abortion clinics with a gun to their heads? O_o No, the people getting abortions are, in fact, the women; generally because of poverty and lack of birth control knowledge or availability. If you don’t like the rate of abortion in that community, there are some genuinely non-racist and helpful things that you could do, and oddly enough, none of them involve restricting women’s say over their own bodies. Instead, maybe you should focus on the availability of birth control and accurate birth control information, education in general, and the issues surrounding disparity of income and poverty. Forcing women to carry unwanted pregnancies to term is hardly going to help with any of that.

    @Lynne B. Do you know the difference between a fetus and a baby? The answer is time. Give a fetus time and you have a baby.

    Most abortions are spontaneous and happen when the fetus or its mother is not quite right for the birthing. It is not a person until it can survive on its own. That abortion is murder is a BELIEF that is not held by a majority of our citizens. How can you justify forcing your belief on others? Texas Rocks says his belief trumps scientific research. If you do not believe in abortion, do not have one. It must be the woman’s choice and government interference does not belong in the choice process.

    Lynne B, your comment is so very well stated.
    Yes, education and contraception is the answer.

    @herdleader1953

    No, the answer is not “time”; it is what happens during that time. What happens is the development of the fetus into a functional organism. With a functional nervous system.

    Medically speaking, death is the point at which there is no more discernable brain activity. Brain death is death. It is the termination of a life. If the brain is not functional, the body is a body, no longer a living person, regardless of whether the heart still beats or the liver is healthy. That is the point at which this formerly-living former-person may be disassembled and the still-healthy bits used to save the lives of other people, and while there are people who don’t want that to happen to them or their loved ones, few find that morally objectionable. And at that point, the interests and rights of the living unambiguously outweigh those of the dead, although the wishes of the dead (if they are known) may be followed out of respect.

    <br /
    Given this, though, why should we consider living tissues to be an individual life with identity, perception and conscious awareness before there is functional brain activity? If there is no brain activity, then the bits of meat may be alive, but it is not a life. And the rights and interests of those with awareness, perception, consciousness of identity and the responsibility for consequences….they take priority.

    I don’t think you understand much; Europe is not a single country, for instance. Policy can vary widely from one country to the next. Italy, that most profoundly Catholic country, allows abortion up to 12 weeks. Spain allows abortion on request up to 22 weeks. Perhaps the most liberal country in the world with regard to abortion law, the Netherlands allow abortion up to 24 weeks; and consider: the Netherlands also have detailed and comprehensive sex education and free contraceptives, and their abortion rate is also the lowest in the world.

    And planned parenthood is a big part of that lowest abortion rate. Plus that is also with far more governmental help that there exists in any part of the USA, let alone Texas.

    I love the hypocrisy pf the ultra conservatives that constantly complain about governmental spending on the one had and then turn around and complain about abortion on the other. Conservative estimates now state that it takes some $300,000 to reasonably raise an individual child from birth to adulthood.. If you multiplied that number by the estimated 50,000,000 legal abortions performed in this country since abortion was made legal. You come up with the figure of just about $15 trillion, or just about the entire National Debt! Hey, ultra conservatives, you can have it one way or the other, but not both!!
