Congress should remember that without gerrymandering many of them would not be there. Democrats garnered more total votes than did the Republicans. The Republicans can claim no mandate.

    mandate!?!? republicans?!? BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

had they won ANY election by this margin popular OR electoral they would be crowing MANDATE from every rooftop. All i hear from them is how the dems do NOT have a mandate.

the dynamic has changed. they can continue to screw the country for idealogy (the ideology of making obama a one term president kinda failed at great expense to us all), but these house republicans face RE-ELECTION. it would be hard for them to not negotiate and feel secure in re-election when one considers where the country has gone socially.

it’s a pity we can’t have social liberalism or even social tolerance AND fiscal conservatism, but no party is offering that.

When shrub was re-elected in 2004 with a SMALLER E.C. majority, and NOT the popular vote, the Cons were shrieking “MANDATE-MANDATE” from the rooftops.
Now, in 2012, with Obama winning 332 to 203, AND winning the Popular vote, they insist on calling it a “Squeaker”!
Can you say “Double Standard”? I knew you could…

Great cartoon. Bipartisan blame and I always enjoy Mr. Sargent’s art. Pat Oliphant’s art is my actual favorite, it reminds me a bit of some of Thomas Nast’s political cartoons. Here’s a timely one.

Oliphant hasn’t had new art up in a while. I hope he is still employed.

Every Texas Congressman knows that, if you try to go across the aisle, you reach the edge and fall off.

The world is obviously a disk with a few bumps, and Columbus sailed from one peninsula to a small island that was still far from the edge of the disk, the edge being somewhere before reaching the Democrat side of the aisle.

Michael wme: Unless you happen to know, off the top of your large, bald head what “people back home” in every single district are thinking on every issue. That’s how Sam Rayburn did it, and would prove it on occasion by “inviting” recalcitrant members to the “Board of Education” (a lavish dinner in the Speaker’s apartment).

I have used his library on occasion, it is less than a mile from my house.

I did an image search for Mr. Rigby after going to the website and I do indeed remember some of that art. Thanks for the memories.

The Republicans can claim no mandate.

That would not be a safe bet. A local election a few years back saw 3 people running for city councilperson of my ward. The “winner” received a whopping 34% of the votes and claimed it was a “mandate” for his platform. He was well and truly an idiot.

And today that man is the number one pick to run for president on the Republican ticket for 2016.
