Regarding nationally televised statements about whether or not Iraq is really a war of Christians/Muslims, we declared on national television that the war was a “Crusade”, their fundamentalists conduct terrorism and ours support taking us into pre-emptive wars. Falwell, Robertson, assorted others have ALWAYS stated that this is an end time holy war, much as you may pretend not to know it, the religious “right” that really isn’t.

Funny and I like… BUT big difference. One he is shunned and called out for what he is, a murder. The other will be defended by most in his faith. And some countries will call him a hero.

True Wabac but I will not hear anyone of “faith” or a political leader calling him a hero. Or even see a children’s show showing how good it is to be a murder. But on the other side both are true.

Oh Really. How about Jill Stanek? You are very much kidding yourself harleyquinn. It is very sad and unfortunate that so many have let their religious beliefs stray from the teachings and covenants of their religion. This would be true for Christians or Muslims. Fanaticism and extremism is not something you find in the Bible or the Koran. But many are mislead in to believing otherwise. One would do wisley to search their hearts and minds when they are receiving a message of hate and predjudice, for these are not the teachings of Jesus Christ, and any one who thinks so, is listening to false prophets.

Two words, Harley
“Go Eric!”
jkshaw said, 5 months ago
Harley, there is a good sized group here in America calling Roeder a hero, too. And there is an even larger group in Islam calling the actions of the Islamist extremists among them contrary to the teaching of the Koran and a danger to Islam.
Take the broad brush out of your hand please.
wbr said, 5 months ago

HQ, if you’ve any interest in what an Islamic in the middle east, a U.S. citizen in Kuwait, has to say about terrorism, here’s one of many links….http://www.commongroundnews.org/article.php?id=24865&lan=en&sid=1&sp=0

HQ is overlooking the summary collection of the Japanese into containment camps, no religion tied to that but the tendency persists among the extremists, people swept up by sentiment and fear during wars. You’re still stating that all Muslims approve of terrorist actions, what about Bosnia-Herzogovina, HQ? Mass killings on both sides of the fence, Kurds and Christians alike as proven by mass graves. Are you responsible for policies carried out by that government, attempted genocide? Global Jihad is a ridiculous concept, terrorism is centered within the middle-east because that’s where the heart of the conflict resides, centered in and inspired by the disputed territories, Palestinians and Israelis. Regardless what you think of that conflict, it’s the centerpiece of middle-east problems and blaming Islamics around the globe for that is a ridiculous proposal, they represent about a fifth of the world’s population, the portion of the globe representing majority Muslim populations is about that, too. Within non-fundamentalist, non-theocratic countries they co-exist just fine with other religions….http://www.mapsofworld.com/world-religion-map.htm

http://www.thenation.com/doc/20071119/cole Better yet, HQ, let’s see what politics has to do with how big a threat Muslims are perceived to be in the United States…….
M Kitt

“Advocates of the “war on terror” fantasize about the Muslim world as a Soviet Union-type challenge to the United States. In fact, the dozens of countries with majority Muslim populations are mostly strong allies of the United States. One, Turkey, is a NATO ally, and six (Morocco, Egypt, Jordan, Bahrain, Kuwait and Pakistan) are non-NATO allies. Only fourteen countries have this status, so Muslim states make up nearly half. The United States counts many other friends in the region, having significant frictions only with Sudan, Syria and Iran, and those are mixed pictures (Syria and Sudan helped against Al Qaeda, and Iran sought a strategic alliance with the United States against Saddam Hussein in early 2003).”

Sargent did get it right. Roeder is a FANATIC and CRAZY!! His behavior cannot legitimately called “Christian” even though the liberals are fervently lining up to try to make the case that it is.
cdward said, 5 months ago
IrishEddie, again we have to be careful with the broad brush. “even though the liberals are fervently lining up to try to make the case that it is.”
I am one of “the liberals” and I am one of the Christians. There are millions of liberal Christians who know full well that Roeder’s behavior bears no resemblance to our Lord’s. Sadly, though, I have heard others who claim the mantle of Christianity also justify or even encourage extremist, violent and murderous actions. Not that we haven’t seen non-religious do the same in other contexts.
DrCanuck said, 5 months ago
To Irish’ and cdward: From your own Bible:
“Thus says the Lord God of Israel, ‘Put every man his sword on his side, and go to and fro from gate to gate throughout the camp, and slay every man his companion, and every man his neighbor.’” (Exod 32:27)
and
Now therefore, kill every male among the little ones, and kill every woman who has known man by lying with him. (But all the young girls who have not known a man by lying with him, keep alive for yourselves.”) (Num 31:17)
Looks to me like Roeder was simply following in the Judeo-Christian tradition. Who are YOU to say that your interpretation is correct and his is in error?

You know M from your own link
“As Islam and terrorism are ever united in the media, irrespective of how unfair it may be, the challenge that lies ahead for all Muslims is to denounce terrorism wherever it is hiding.”
I want this. Please show me where?

HQ, I’m impressed. You reviewed the writings of a Muslim in Kuwait, you’ve given at least one of them credit for being thinking, feeling human beings. Have to concede that there may be hope for you yet…. :-) Don’t notice any rantings about holy wars or death to the infidels…..much the opposite. This person is concerned that terrorism is a tragic, stupid mistake for those of that faith.

They have the same frame of mind, so let them rejoice together : )
cdward said, 5 months ago
Dr. Canuck, indeed those words are there. Fortunately, archaeological evidence suggests that there was no whole-sale slaughter, and that the scriptures fabricated this to make themselves sound tougher. The evidence points to a mundane, mostly peaceful entry into the land where the existing occupants essentially said, “We’ve got room, come on in.”
But you should know two important things about biblical interpretation. First of all, if you read it in English, you do not always get an accurate picture of what’s written. Translation even of modern languages is tricky, and when it’s an ancient language (they didn’t even use vowels!) with corrupted manuscripts, sometimes what we read is just guess work.
Second, in many churches – like my denomination – we do not read those scriptures and literal. We see them as a faithful record of the community’s struggle with their relationship with God. That’s why the scriptures constantly contradict themselves or seem to be arguing with themselves. Because they are! It’s a conversation just like on this comment board.
So, for us, we’d say, “Just because it says something in the bible doesn’t mean anything.” We use several methods working in concert to determine right action. Those include scripture but also our tradition (which is ever changing) and reason (both heart and head). They must work in conjunction – and Roeder’s actions do not fit within that framework.

Guess the report wasn’t off at all.
Looks like the Justice Dept will have to determine if Roeder should get shipped off to Getmo in Cuba.

He’ll have to go. Fox News and every Republican in Congress has made it perfectly clear for the past month that our prisons are incapable of holding terrorists. There’s no other choice!
By the way, are we sure that Roeder didn’t have any associates who might be plotting another murder right now? Get out the waterboarding equipment!

cdward: you obviously know what you’re talking about; very well stated. I was speaking ironically to the same end to which you have arrived; scripture must be interpreted in the light of reason and changing social values. (At least, that’s what I learned in seminary. :) Apologies offered if required.

cdward said, 5 months ago
DrCanuck, no apologies necessary. I learn a lot from this forum, and if anything I say adds to the conversation, I’m happy. I’m afraid I don’t do irony very well (whenever I try, it falls flat). I didn’t actually enjoy seminary very much, but one of the first things they told us when we got there was that we had to let go of all our preciously held preconceptions and let the evidence be what it is.
Anthony: “BLASPHEMY!!!
GONNA BURN, CD!!!”
I get that all the time; I’m an Episcopalian.

WBR, Inotice those among us with the least intention to carry on discussions often use absolutes, “jkshaw you have evertthing backwards – NO ONE is calling Roeder a hero and OBL teaching are unfortunatly in line with KORAN”. Must be nice to be that completely confident without feeling the responsibility of stating why, sounds like a faith-based initiative…. ;-)
