At least you don’t have to drive 30 miles a day going from one school to another. That’s what they did to our “music department.” Kids were lucky to get 45 minutes of instruction per week, music teacher was lucky to get a 15-minute break between schools.

Yet look what happens when anyone dares to suggests that perhaps less money should be spent on the football team next year.

Our school district refused to switch to an academic schedule similar to Japan’s and the UK’s (eight weeks of class, two weeks of break, no three-month summer vacation, which everyone knows causes kids’ math and reading skills to deteriorate) because it would interfere with the football season. And the parents were down with that.

Football is the bane of American society. And now they have found that concussions are a bad thing. How fitting.

If a kid wants to learn to read and write and learn math, or if a parent wants their kid to know these things, they have to do it on their own time.

You would believe the level of quality our sports gear was. It was pro-level quality. Pro-level!! But many of our classes didn’t have books.

I would have loved a big art department and no sports at all. I would have been fine with that. Sports are often the dumping ground for unwanted kids. A parent or parents hate their kids? The kid winds up playing sports. I saw a lot of that. Everyone pretends that it isn’t like that. But let me tell you, the kids who are loved are the one watching the sports.
