Greatly influenced by my mother, I wanted to be an artist. However, the first paragraph of a book cured me by stating that the average income of a free-lance artist was sub-poverty, and I do like to be able to eat.
It is to be noted that when I read that paragraph, Picasso was still alive to keep the average income at its high level.

Sure it is if they only rely on their work they like over doing a job they need to pay the bills.

I wish someone like this showed up at our school. I would have been turning cartwheels, even though I don’t know how. If you want to learn how to draw cartoons around here you’ve got to take a class at a distant art center for an outlay of $$. But it’s even worse with learning to read, write and arithmetic. For that you’ve got to go to the local C.C. And they are not going to teach any of those subjects well, so you better get some books to supplement the class studies and learn on your own. It’s a backwater here.
