    Makes me think of Pee Wee Herman’s eyes when he’s skulking around in the dark in “Pee Wee’s Big Adventure.”

    I have a generator sitting in my garage because, every five years or so, power is out for several days.

    Been there, done that. I take it you have the same power company we do… :P

    We had power like that too, until the utility company finally sent someone out to find out why. He discovered that a neighbor’s tree had a limb that was hanging a few inches above the power line. Whenever a strong wind or storm blew in the right direction, the limb would slap the line and snap it. A chainsaw fixed that in minutes.

    I lived in an area with a lazy power company. Some drunk would run into a control box, and the power company was very leisurely about getting it back on. I got the impression they were happy about it.

    @ehtaniguchi

    Good power companies prune the trees ahead of time and anticipate these things.

    Are there any good power companies?

    Maybe not. But some are definitely more inept than others.

    I used to live in an area serviced by a subsidiary of Enron when the Jeffrey Skilling-Kenneth Lay scandal hit the fan. We had rolling blackouts during the summer when we needed power to run the AC. Finally the state intervened: but since then I haven’t trusted a power/utility company, even the ones with supposedly good records of customer service.
