One time there was an exhibit of his works. A couple of pranksters took a piece of something dried up, etc, framed it, label said it was the ear he cut off. They managed to put it up on the wall. This was way back, decades ago, security was not as advanced as it is now.

Regretfully, Van Gogh had died from suicide during one of his bouts with madness. Whatever his mental illness, Van Gogh showed a genius not only in his painting, but in his observations of the world about him. Once criticised for the number of shades of yellow he had placed in his painting of a wheat field, it has been shown that the variety of observable colors in a harvest wheat field were that great.

To give you an idea on how much impact Van gogh’s artwork has made on our culture, listen to Don Mclean’s song “Starry, Starry Night”.

But from the madness there came genius.
Or perhaps from the genius there came madness.
The mind is a wonderful and horrifying place.

What’s amazing is how valuable his stuff is now. In his day they used Van Gogh paintings in chicken coops and for target practice.
