“Wolves chase squirrels?” When researchers analyzed the stomach contents of timber wolves, the most common item was field mice. A wolf can’t chase a squirrel up a tree, but a tree-squirrel on the ground looks like a snack if the wolf can cut it off from the trees. And there are many varieties of ground squirrels, although they might be harder to catch – usually they have dug a tunnel near where they are foraging.
