mightaswellbe, “scuttlebutt” comes from an old nautical term. In the days of sailing ships there was a cut down barrel used as a drinking water point for the sailors, it was called a scuttled butt, butt being the barrel and scuttled, it being cut down. Gossip/rumours around the old fashioned drinking fountain became known as “scuttlebutt”.

I’ve always wondered how the scuttled butt was secured in bad weather. My ship reached a 45 degree roll one night on the mid watch. I was young so it wasn’t scary.

not really, the melting point is too high to use pure sand. So “soda”, sodium carbonate is added to lower melting point, and “lime”, calcium oxide, is added to make the glass non-water soluable which solves the problem lime alone would cause.
