Why did the pound/number sign become used as internet grammar? It accomplishes nothing, unless the machine recognizes it as a programming instruction. Does it?

Yeah, to me a pound sign (#) is a pound sign. Hash is something good to eat (if it is made right).

Including a hashtag makes a topic searchable on Twitter. For example, if I tweeted “Mastroianni’s comic was stupid today.”, no one who was interested in the B.C. comic would be able to find my tweet. If I tweeted “Mastroianni’s comic was stupid today! #BCcomic” Then anyone could search Twitter for #BCcomic and find everyone who was talking about BC.

No It doesn’t, but that could be set up that way. Anyway when did the pound sign become the hash tag?
