Small dragon? I think it is the state bird of Michigan, and it hasn’t evolved all that much since B.C.

A longtime NPS fellow I met some years back had worked in multiple places like Alaska and Florida. He thought the mosquitoes were worse in the everglades than in alaska.

I’ll go out on a limb and say that we’ve pockets of horrible mosquitoes in most parts of the nation. Time of year and location. East side of Klamath Lake, no problems, despite the swamps. Never got bit in 3+ years. West side of Klamath Lake and all you had to do was step out of the car and the dinner bell went off. chompachompachompa. The worst I’ve ever experienced was in the swampy levies at Worden. More than fifty bites just stopping for gas. Things were just everywhere. Got massively sick for a couple of hours. Most years I never got bit there. Big hatchout in 2003, I guess.

I’m probably going to be sorry for asking this, but…where or what is Yooperland?

Yoopers are people from the Upper Peninsula in Michigan, a.k.a., Yooperland.

Back in the day when the Earth’s atmosphere had about 35% oxygen (several hundred million years ago – today it’s about 20%), insects could grow larger. There were millipedes 10 feet long, and dragon files the size of geese. And you couldn’t sqish a cockroach under foot; it would take a sizeble and massive club just to stun it.
