Are there daughters still named Mercedes, or did the car cause the name to fall out of style? On another note, are there still men named Edsel?

one of my co-workers back in the late ’90’s was named Mercedes- she was hispanic, believe it or not.

    Edsel, on the other hand…
the name sounds like it should’ve been left in the dark ages…don’t know what possess henry to name one of his children that bizzarre name…

“Alcohol”? Certainly not ethanol. Something like C4H3OCH2OH?

Err, methyltetrahydrofuranol? (Error, high school chemistry retention exceeded!)

If Mercedes went deep sea diving, would she get the Benz?
    (Ducking now!)

That isn’t the common alcohol (ethyl)! That’s furfuryl alcohol!

Not… No tetrahydro-. Just 1-furanol. But I did dig the Mercedes Benzene. In the mid 70s I worked in a lab with a very elegant Filipina named Mercedes—we called her Merci. I’m surprised she never coined that joke.

Ah, right, no “tetrahydro-”. Thanks, alananda. I’d confused myself. :-P

I don’t know the term “furanol”. Neither does Wikipedia, it seems. Google knows, but suggests it’s C4H4O2. That’s insufficient by a methylene bridge, I think. If I got the term right …

Furfuryl alcohol, as shyamgs suggests? Looks like it: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Furfuryl_alcohol – “also called 2-furylmethanol or 2-furancarbinol”.

Old joke. First saw that one back in the ’70s.

Kekule said that the idea for benzene’s structure came to him in a dream. One sort of wonders whether any substance assisted that dream.

Could this strip be telling readers not to drink and drive?
