“Mastadon”? Is there a joke here that has escaped me, or do the cartoonists not know how to spell mastodon?

Maybe they ran it through spell check, rather than using a dictionary. (I use spell check to catch typos, but I reaaaaaly don’t trust it for spellings after finding how many screwups are in the ones available.)

Once sent an email to a coworker. The spell check flagged his name as an error. About 75% of the alternates it offered were obscene. Had many of us in the office wondering about those who develop the algorithms for such stuff.

We spell it “Mastodon” in the modern English, but back in the day they spelled it " Mastadon".
