Some woodpeckers are really that, well, stupid. Walter Lantz supposedly got his idea for Woody Woodpecker when he and his bride were on their honeymoon and a woodpecker kept tapping on the cabin. (Not too many insects in the wood of a cabin to eat, normally, and the paint or stain wouldn’t be too good for the bird, I would guess.)
    .
This spring, one of the woodpeckers banged on the flue for the wood stove several times. First time I heard it, my initial thought was a jackhammer near the house. Took photos of the silly thing. Can’t imagine it being very much fun to whack steel with it’s beak.

sometimes woodpeckers will peck on things to purposely make a louder sound to establish their territory. That’s why they often will peck on things like rain gutters on houses.

@Alexikakos and afficionado: If you think these comics are in bad taste why do you waste your time reading them?

For the same reason people keep going back to a once favourite restaraunt that’s gone down hill. We know what it was and can be and we hope it will be this time.

I think someone should tell the mods to stop having comments for BC if this is what happens.

BUT … this isn’t a ‘bad’ strip. Today is kinda funny. Bird thinks he sees bark, but it’s a bit omnivore’s leg. Kinda funny, to me anyway.
Maybe you need to take a break from comics?

There was a woodpecker around here that did stuff like that. It pecked on a transformer up above the house for about an hour once. Then the transformer exploded taking out the woodpecker (I found the remains) and the top of the pole.

A woodpecker used to tap on our neighbor’s down spout. It was LOUD. I don’t know what they did to get rid of it. No shots were heard.

I see nothing of “bad taste” here so please explicate? Perhaps your halo is on too tight?

I saw it as funny. A sleepy or drunk woodpecker mistakes a dinosaurs’ hide for tree bark. That is amusing, not in poor taste.

We had a flicker drill a hole through the wall of a storage shed, and before we could cover it a pair of barn swallows moved in and built a nest. My son said the flicker was just the contractor.

Nice of you to notice. I’ve known that for 40 years.

The problem with commenting on comic strips…… is if your view is a complete 180 to the majority or simply a reference to something different.
    .
Thus the problem of satire, parody, comedy and higher commentary such as the Three Stooges.
    .
@corjo2 – who knew birds hired contractors! Hope you kept the barn swallows. They keep the insect population down.

Male woodpeckers also hammer objects to declare territory and attract mates. The louder the noise the greater the effect.

What exactly is in bad taste? The idea of a bird with a hangover? C’mon, that’s a liiiiiitle funny. Lighten up.

Interesting comments today. No political venom, a diversity of views, good stories, and both sound and tongue-in-cheek advice. All without vitrol or snide and nasty remarks. I think BC and ID are beneficial comics in many ways.
