LOL! I’m not up to Katniss’s skills, but I can hit a broad, moving target at 50 feet. (Not much, I know. But then I’m not an Olympian) :)

Wonder how well modern archers would do if they were allowed only a REAL bow — i.e., a long bow — without all the
    hi-tech garbage….

I wonder how fast an athlete would run bear foot without the modern running spikes hi-tech garbage. You want us to go back to the stoneage?

The next rifle competition will feature machine guns atop sandbags with laser sights.

They should have 2 divisions in these various events: “Open” and “Traditional”. Open divisions would allow all the high-tech crap, and Traditional would be a ‘no-frills’ contest. I’d probably be more likely to watch a competition in the no-frills division.

Okay, I do know about Google, so I was able to find what he’s talking about, more or less. Wouldn’t have thought it was a particularly obvious joke.

One of the Olympic events “I’d like to see” is the traditional combat use of an English Longbow – A one minute timed trial with a 1m rope circle @ 100m, the winner is whoever gets the most arrows in the circle within the time limit.

snerk – cross-over fictons are always in season ;-)
I used to have a nice 40# test bow that I used for target practice in my back yard. When I finally got to college they offered archery as one of the Phys Ed classes, so I showed up with my own bow. Frankly I was afraid I’d break one of the flimsy bows the school supplied. Fortunately the teacher had the targets set up with the river behind them – it was about the only direction safe from most of these Robin Hood wanna-bes
He was intrigued by my bow and asked to inspect it. I always unstrung it before transport, so I just handed it to him as-is. Oh the embarrassment – he couldn’t string it (LOL). To be fair, he was the jack-of-all trades teacher they had teaching all the general Phys Ed classes, and he wasn’t particularly well trained for most of them. The average student wouldn’t have known that, being too anxious to simply get one more 1/4 credit of requirement out of the way. The kicker was in the horseback class when I had to (tactfully as possible) explain that the reason the horse wouldn’t take the bit he was putting in its mouth was that he had it upside down….(sigh) But that class is a whole other story ;-)
