This one has got me scratching my head. Can anybody tell me:
(1) Is the joke a reference to the 2012 Olympics losing money?
(2) Does “that thing” refer to the torch or the cauldron?
(3) Since both are about to be burned up, why would anyone need to “be careful” with them?
(4) The guy behind the rock in panel 1 appears to be a media commentator. So why does the runner hand him the torch?

It’s a reference to Greece’s economic woes.

Doesn’t EVERY Olympics lose money?
You always spend a LOT more just getting the thing than it’s ever worth!

Yes, it is a reference to Greece’s debt. And I think it’s funny.

IIRC, the 1984 Olympics, run by Peter Uberoth(sp?) did not lose money, or very little if it did. In spite of all the promoters who wanted to gold plate everything (with other people’s money), he put the brakes on them and kept within budget. We also had fewer traffic jams during the Olympics than on regular days.

another reference is that the runner can keep the torch that they use…. if they pay for it.

It costs a LOT of money to run the Olympics… but sponsors and advertisers pay a LOT of money to have their commercials and signs posted during the games. I would say most don’t lose money… and it looks like Wolf gave a good citation for it (at least the more recent ones where advertisers were more aggressive). ;-)

Probably had to get a loan for the fuel burning in that thing. Should have used coal.
