Basic Instructions started out as a small side-feature Scott Meyer created to entertain people who came to his website looking to hire a comedian. It wasn't long before the comic was far more popular than anything Scott ever did as a comedian.
Basic Instructions is a series of guides meant to help you lead a better life. They cover topics as diverse as "How to Deal with Boredom" and "How to Travel Back in Time to Deliver a Dire Warning to Your Former Self". Basic Instructions is populated with exaggerated versions of Scott, his family and his friends, which has caused no small amount of unpleasantness.

The first panel is a winner by itself.

I worked with a man who was seriously disturbed and hated the store manager.
I kept my eyes and ears open for several weeks after he quit.
If I ever knew anyone who was the type to go on a workplace rampage, this was the guy.

Y’all. I’m a relatively new reader of this comic. Is there a “cast of characsters” available? or would someone mind filling me in?

Thank you, FerAd. This comic is getting to be a favorite of mine.

Oh – that IS Rick – I wasn’t sure at first.
cobycombs, the short-haired woman is Scott’s wife. A few months ago, he changed her look just for one strip, because some reader thought her normal look was “too much like a Lesbian.”
So Scott decided to make her look a little more feminine for just one week – he used a pic of that lovely, feminine actress: Portia DiRossi!
Oh, scroll back to Monday’s strip to see the Mullet-Headed Boss.

This strip is so funny, too bad it’s not updated daily!

What is Scott trying to do in the first panel (where he keeps saying “crap”?) I tried viewing larger, but that doesn’t work for these strips that are already pretty big!
BTW, there are 2 good rebuttals to that “Insanity is doing the same thing….etc.” cliche.
1) If at first you don’t succeed, try, try again.
2) Practice makes perfect.

The Wild Sow- It looks like he’s trying to play a video game. I also enjoyed your rebuttals!

Thank you too, Wild Sow, for expanding the id for me. Incidentally, I thought that the first panel showed Scott playing with origami.
