Basic Instructions started out as a small side-feature Scott Meyer created to entertain people who came to his website looking to hire a comedian. It wasn't long before the comic was far more popular than anything Scott ever did as a comedian.
Basic Instructions is a series of guides meant to help you lead a better life. They cover topics as diverse as "How to Deal with Boredom" and "How to Travel Back in Time to Deliver a Dire Warning to Your Former Self". Basic Instructions is populated with exaggerated versions of Scott, his family and his friends, which has caused no small amount of unpleasantness.

Incidently, there’s a book titled ‘Newtonian Physics’ so I guess it does exist. I don’t understand the difference so much though. Physics and mechanics should be unified.

Classical (Newtonian) mechanics is a part of physics, as are quantum mechanics, electrostatics, electrodynamics, thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, magnetics, optics and so on.
By using the term “physics” for both “mechanics” disciplines, I think he’s emphasizing the whole mindset by which we approach physical problems. These are two paradigms that affect how we look at the entire field of physics.
The witty dialog has always been my main attraction to this strip, but I think Scott got a little tired by the last panel. The punch line seems weak to me.
Not that I have any right to complain…I couldn’t even think up a topic much less explore it as he does.
