Basic Instructions started out as a small side-feature Scott Meyer created to entertain people who came to his website looking to hire a comedian. It wasn't long before the comic was far more popular than anything Scott ever did as a comedian.
Basic Instructions is a series of guides meant to help you lead a better life. They cover topics as diverse as "How to Deal with Boredom" and "How to Travel Back in Time to Deliver a Dire Warning to Your Former Self". Basic Instructions is populated with exaggerated versions of Scott, his family and his friends, which has caused no small amount of unpleasantness.

I have never read a “Basic Instructions” that didn’t have at least one laugh-out loud joke in it, including this one. The Portia de Rossi line was absoutely hilarious.

Geez, and here I thought Scott might just be attracted to a masculine looking type of women.

But it also goes to show that in comedy, timing is everything!

I’m not sure which was funnier – the Portia deRossi joke, or me trying to explain to my wife why the Portia deRossi joke was funny.

Naturally, I had to send this one to a friend who’s the king of the “crawling joke.” He will not take the hint, of course.

Portia being a lesbian* in real life is an intended part of the joke, right? Or is this just a solid gold coincindence?
*not that there is anything wrong with that.

Ryan, I think with the fact that Scott used “feminine” and “like a lesbian” in quotes, that this is a complete over the top slam dunk on some negative posters from the past. But I could be wrong, but rarely are there true coincidences.

Edcole, I agree that the LOL stuff happens nearly every time, but there are also some subtle items that really drive home the point of panel four. Five synonym references of fat along with a game piece is priceless. I nearly choked on a cup of coffee when I read …chessbishop.
