By far the best run program in the public schools is the lunch program. The women there are humble and hard working, always frantically trying their level best. You could eat off their floors, much less the gleaming counters. The hot food is consistently delicious. In fact I want to go there now and have a salisbury steak. I’ve always thought if we canned most of the teachers and put the lunch ladies in charge of our public education we would improve our standing in the world. You may say that the lunch ladies are not qualified by education to teach. I would say most of the public school teachers are not qualified by attitude to teach. Attitude is going to beat potential every time. The school sports teams won’t accept a good athlete with a bad attitude. Why should the schools accept a teacher with the same?

Yes, comicsssfan, very astute. I believe the lunch program for our children is well run because both sides of the aisle can agree it is very important and, aside from a few squabbles over catsup being a vegetable or a condiment, there is very little disagreement. Now…if they could just back off the thousands of rules which make teaching difficult we might make some real process in education.

Oh, I thought you were being sarcastic. Most people have bad memories of lunch cafeteria food. Canned meat, veggies, inedible sandwiches…..yuck!!! Education did not redeem itself in terms of food until I reached college. Now that was good eats.

We had some of the best cafeteria food when I was in elementary school. I even asked for the recipe for shepard’s pie (ground beef and vegetables between layers of mashed potatoes) and got mad at my mom when it did not taste the same as at school (must be something about those 3 × 5 foot baking pans they used). I do miss veal cutlet on a stick, but I did prefer my mom’s pizza.
