Baldo is our first comic strip that features Latino characters and themes. Baldo lives with his parents and works at Auto Y Rod, Inc., selling car parts. Through his daily exploits in the world of girls, cars, and little sisters, readers will learn just how well they can identify with this teen. Writer Hector Cantú and artist Carlos Castellanos have given us a comic strip whose warmth and gentle humor will appeal to all.

Back handed compliment, Tia…

Why is Sergio calling her tia? I thought she was his sister, not his aunt.

^I think it’s because that’s what he calls her in front of the kids. It’s not that uncommon for parents to end up calling each other “Mom” and “Dad.”

Tia Carmen tells it like it is.

She is his Aunt, the kids great Aunt. My guess by Baldos age he is in his late 30’s to mid 40’s and she is in her 60’s. Notice she does not have a job outside the house so she is retirement age.

One of my aunts friends referred to my aunt as “Your Auntie Ruth”. I just looked at her and said, “I have never called Aunt Ruth ‘AUNTIE’ in my life!” and walked off.
I was getting pizzed.

In my brother-in-law’s family, it’s common to address aunts and uncles simply by title, rather than specifying a name. My nieces will say things like “Uncle, have you read this book?” rather than “Uncle Fritz, have you read this book?”
There’s nothing objectively WRONG with that, and I don’t correct them, but it sounds very strange to my ears.

There’s logic for you

Yes, Tia Carmen is Sergio’s aunt and Baldo’s and Gracie’s great-aunt. She moved into the house after Sergio’s wife / Baldo’s and Gracie’s mother died.

Thanks for the history, Dude. I, for one, did not know of the past of the characters in this strip.
Some people know all the characters names, their particular nuances, backgrounds, relatives, places they live and lived before, all that.
They have no life.
