My grandmother only had an 8th grade education. My dad was a high school dropout. So was my mom. I was the first person in my family to graduate high school in 4 generations.

I was valedictorian of my graduating class.

    Dream big. Work hard. Persevere.

You’re only limited by your imagination and your drive.

    Congrats, Jose! Do NASA proud!

Be careful, LibrarianInTraining, because NotNormanChubsyUbsy will complain about you posting personal information.

By coincidence, my parents were somewhat like yours. Mom wasn’t allowed to go to high school after she was graduated from the 8th Grade. Dad dropped out of the 9th grade to go to work when he actually didn’t have to.

But, you would never had consided them to be ignorant. Mom had wanted to be a teacher. She liked it when I was one for a while. All of Mom’s siblings were allowed to finish school and 3 of her brothers were college graduates.

My late partner, Ed, didn’t go to high school; but, some people thought that he went to college because of the way that he made an effort to educate himself so that he could read the free newspaper he got at work as a security guard. He got a dictionary and looked up the words which he did not understand.

Better watch your arse, Joe Allen. Your bragging about your “late partner” Ed might be mistaken as a “gay comment”.

Some of us that dislike the gay community might want to kick a certain part of your anatomy.

Stick it back on the closet, dude!

Hipster, what is wrong with Joe’s life? It doesn’t hurt you or anyone else, so leave him alone.

Jose, might want to have NASA take extra long looks at Atlantis, Discovery, and Endeavor before you launch. Better still, start work on new ones.

My parents both quit school after 7th grade and never went to High School (even though they both went to vocational school later on). My grandparents had even less education. It wasn’t easy for the older generations to get an education.

But my brother and my sister both went to High School and then to College. I didn’t manage to graduate from High School, as I got ill. But I went to Junior College and took classes there. And maybe I will go to a “real” college one day. How times have changed…

Carmy, beautiful. There is nothing more inspiring!

Since I’m already well familiar with the concept on a personal level, I choose:

THIS is the day that the Lord has made and I will rejoice and be glad in it!

    And that means everyday!

    Have a great day, everyone!

Margueritem, actually, Duct Tape is very much like the Force in Star Wars. Not only does it hold the universe together, but it has a Light side and a Dark side, and it’s very important to remember which is which because it could end in disaster if you don’t!

    lol ;)

My old man always had to say it was a struggle to go to school. A long way to go, too cold, too hot, no food, uphill both ways, all that crap. I found out a few years ago when I went back to his home town in the middle of Missouri (anyone ever heard of Chula, just north of Chilicothe?) and saw the former foreclosed home he and the family lost during the depression. My uncle knew where the one room school house was located, now long abandoned in a field of weeds, and we measured the distance from the house (a new one built on the grounds of the former one) and it was less than a mile and a half from where he lived.
I guess the older he got, the worse it became.
