From the salmon-colored sofa that is the center of the Arlo & Janis universe, this unique and quixotic comic strip has been just about everywhere. From unvarnished human drama to flights of unfettered comic fantasy, from unabashed pathos to unsurpassed observational wit, Arlo & Janis is perhaps the most unpigenholeable comic strip ever. It also invents new words!
The characters Arlo and Janis have played the parts of mermaids, squirrels, alligators and grasshoppers over the years, all while exploring the unexaggerated human condition and managing to become, with their son Gene, perhaps the most believable family in the funny pages. This unique approach has garnered Arlo & Janis an intelligent and engaged readership and guaranteed that a percentage of it will be confused at any given moment. However, readers eagerly return every day for another quaff from what has been the holy grail for a generation of comic-strip authors: quintessential Boomer humor.

I saw my old friend Linda just today
She looked the same to me as yesterday…
Her wrinkles gave her character,
She still had lots to say,
We talked about the dues we’d had to pay…
She’s still the same, still growin’ everyday..

Janis just figured that their life wouldn’t hit the ‘sitting around the table talking’ until much much later. She probably figured at this stage they’d be out travelling, doing exciting things, etc.

My take is that when they were first married she pictured late forties – early fifties as “old”. Now theat she is at that stage in life it really doesn’t “feel old”.

That’s my take too.

I’m of the same opinion. Now at age 71, I still don’t feel old!

…can’t be disappointed – still alive & kicking, and hopefully, for another 40 or more years!

Is that supposed to be Janis in 40 years? Will she finally be wearing something different? Arlo is still wearing the same shirt.

I was born in 1950. In my youth I really believed that I’d be too old to celebrate when we reached the millennium. When it arrived I found I’d been right all along.

Ouch! I will never be able to get that image of Janis out of my head. Let’s hope JJ ages her VERY slowly and gracefully.
