If that’s a cut tree, it’s possible some animal was there before Ludwig.

Not hard to get….. Watch the Mickey Mouse Christmas Cartoon, and you’ll see that’s what happened with Mickey and Pluto. Starting with Arlo’s (Mickey’s) gesture of the tree’s splendor, then pluto growled (ludwig hissed), and by the end of the cartoon, the tree was destroyed and chipmunks Chip and Dale were found to be the varmints. Janis is just heading off all of the mayhem at the pass.

Arlo isn’t listening for sounds… He’s smelling. Why else would his nostril be illustrated?

Cats also mark their trees by sharpening their claws. They show how big they are by doing it as high as they can reach. Maybe Ludwig saw some claw marks from before Arlo brought the tree in and is reacting to them.

Not all un-neutered cats spray. Personal choice.

Our un-fixed kitty never sprays. Our friends’ fixed kitty not only still sprays, he has a favorite toy to molest, he also hates all human males and mearly tolerates the male half of his human servants. It’s on a cat by cat basis.

The neutering/spraying thing depends on more than one variable. Best results are obtained if it is done before the cat matures. This has as much to do with habit as the cat’s maturity. Some mature kitties aren’t as inclined as others in the first place. But, no matter what the cat’s status, “results may vary”.

Bottom line: Neutering is no guarantee, but usually helps.
