From the salmon-colored sofa that is the center of the Arlo & Janis universe, this unique and quixotic comic strip has been just about everywhere. From unvarnished human drama to flights of unfettered comic fantasy, from unabashed pathos to unsurpassed observational wit, Arlo & Janis is perhaps the most unpigenholeable comic strip ever. It also invents new words!
The characters Arlo and Janis have played the parts of mermaids, squirrels, alligators and grasshoppers over the years, all while exploring the unexaggerated human condition and managing to become, with their son Gene, perhaps the most believable family in the funny pages. This unique approach has garnered Arlo & Janis an intelligent and engaged readership and guaranteed that a percentage of it will be confused at any given moment. However, readers eagerly return every day for another quaff from what has been the holy grail for a generation of comic-strip authors: quintessential Boomer humor.

I think she’s being very rude to that turkey….

Dressing is cooked outside the bird. Stuffing is cooked inside the bird.

better cooking dressing less harmfull then stuffing!!

That’s one deep turkey!

They say it’s better to cook dressing and stuffing separately and add after the turkey is cooked. (Stuffing is chunkier and uses bread, dressing is usually crumbled up cornbread).

I had to look up Bechamel sauce – and even then I am not certain I get the joke. Is it supposed to be funny that Arlo fiddled around making white sauce that only takes 20 minutes to make, while Janis still had her hands up the insides of a frozen turkey? Given that the turkey will take the better part of a day to roast, why would he even be making the sauce before the bird even goes into the oven. This is one of those times when this comic is just meh.

And if that could not be accomplished?..

I am in charge of the deep fried turkey and keeping the beer chest stocked. I love my Thanksgiving job.

Dampwaffle: Why meh? Haven’t you figured out by now that Arlo is a bit out of it, the poet of the couple, while Janis is the one who has her feet on the ground? The interaction between these opposites is what the strip is all about.

beyond that, I don’t see the application of a Bechamel sauce to Turkey and Thanksgiving. It’s not compatible to my palate.

What’s the big deal about turkeys? Remove the giblets, place in roaster set to 325F, wait about 6 hours. Carver.

That’s the joke.
