Still you hope to live long enough to see the results of your plantings so may as well start larger – later in life.

Ok, he must have known who would be responsible for planting, so why did he suggest a larger one then get angry about it?

Twice as wide……1 1/2 times deep……use mulch/dirt to fill if you’re planting in the “concrete” that passes for soil in Nevada.

Arlo always becomes furious at doing anything physical, other than getting up from the couch. It looks like planting that tree might kill him. That’s why it’s amazing to contemplate how Gene turned out – rebuilding an old boat and house simultaneously while attending college and cooking at his grandfather-in-law’s restaurant. It’s like Gene has four full-time jobs! Then, when he has a moment of free time Gene has got to take care of the new wife, pay attention to the step kid and there probably is a baby on the way. Whew! But he’s taking it all in stride. The more work and responsibility lumped onto Gene the better. It balances out Arlo.

or most clay for that matter! It is actually a good rule to follow for most soils. Make sure you remove the burlap and wire too.

The best time to plant a tree… 40 years ago.
The next best time is today! :-)

Yes, they do grow. The sugar maple tree in front of our home is about 1-1/2 times as tall as it was in the 2001 pix in this photo. and our kids are all grown up and on their own too.

proczach, he’s using a spade, not a shovel at all, much better for digging a hole, increased leverage and all that.

Unless you’re in one of the parts where it’s sand…. Oddly enoguh they go side by side where I used to live.

We actually rented a gas powered aguer to dig our post holes for our fence and went ahead and used it to do the hole for our grapevine. Best move I ever made, skipped 3-4 hours of backbreaking digging for a 5 gallon pot….
