    Is it true that some archeologists are digging up the complete statue?

    At least one of them. It has quite a foundation.

    Statues were excavated many years ago. Read Thor Heyerdahls’ book “Aku Aku”.

    The island is not uninhabited, and they have found the quarries from which the statues were cut, with some statues unfinished; but the mystery still remains.

    @gmartin997

    They original inhabitants denuded the island of life and forest to make those stupid giant religious objects. They had groups that tried to out do each other. Still it was amazing they could carve those out of hard volcanic basalt and move them to their present locations then one day everyone stopped. Dropped their tools and did what? The population left is far smaller than it was in the heyday of the island.

    The island of Easter/Rapanui is also an alternate emergency landing for the Space Shuttle. There was a sifi book about that happening.

    @Night-Gaunt49

    Interesting. I was just vaguely recalling a documentary I saw several years ago.
