Trouble in Panel 9. I make it “regret” and “odiferous.” But I’m really not sure.
P1 – Annie, by Jay Maeder and Alan Kupperberg / On it had gone…for as long as anyone could remember.
P2 – Tribune Telegraph, Gang Guns Flare Again / Daily News, Five More Rubouts / Register Informer, Hoods Battle In Streets / Daily Graphic, Crime Czar Shot Down At Breakfast
P3 – The Godfather resolves to end ninety-five years of internecine mob warfare / All I never knowed…all my fadder ever knowed…generations wasted…fine young men squandered…da graveyards demselves cryin’ out in anguish an’ despair!
P4 – Now let us have no more of dat dere! Da woild it toins! Da new dawns dey break!
P5 – Dis is da will of da Godfadder! Let dere be peace betwixt da famblies! Let dere be ack! ack!
P6 – Seen da Godfadder? / Yeh…He’s unner a tree out dere. I woulda shook him but it’s my break.
P7 – Unner a tree? Ya mean ya just let him lay dere? Ya didn’t call nobody? / Yo! I’m Yoon-Yun, OK? I don’t do nothin’ on my break, OK? Maybe ya want I should loose a grievyunce on ya!
P8 – And back in the city / Yeh, huh! Ya don’t say!
P9 – Junior, I regret (?) dat it is my odiferous (?) dooty to inform ya dat yer dear Grandpop has croaked! / Huh? Grandpa? Da Godfadder? / Omigod! Da bum! How could he?
P10 – Fine time da old buzzard picked! Wit him gone dere’ll be no stoppin’ da war! / Just one thing after another in the mobster business, huh? / Leapin’ lizards! / Jay Maeder and Alan Kupperberg 11/23/01

I think we could have done without that anti-union jab in panel 7.

I asked GoComics why Annie has no zoom.
Thier response follows – "Only high-resolution comics are “zoomable.” I’m sorry for any inconvenience. We are adding more and more hi-res comics to the site as we can.

    Sincerely,
    GoComics Support"

Why so sensitive to the union joke? It was the funniest thing in the strip!

Did Daddy Warbucks like the unions? Did Harold Gray?

In answer to the constant questions about the readability of the Annie strips: it SHOULD be obvious to everyone that when these strips were originally scanned from the hard copies, they did not use a high enough resolution scan. Yes, what they’ve got can be enlarged, but all you will see is a bunch of enlarged blobs. Live with it!

Marvee – Apparently Warbucks liked the unions in the strip pre-FDR. After the New Deal, not so much. (At least this is what I glean from the intro to Vol 1 of IDW’s Complete Orphan Annie series.)
