It’s the Pentagon, fella! Just tell that nosy guy you’re on an assignment and he’s not cleared to know about it. Clearance level is only part of it — there’s also “need to know”.

When I was in the US Army and worked for Army Lawyers, aka JAG officers, I had top secret security clearance.
I was in an administration company and most of those in the company worked in the Personnel Section. So, when a person in Personnel asked me a question about something I knew or he thought I knew, I didn’t tell him because he didn’t have a need to know.
If he had a need to know, his own superiors would have already told him.
The other guy might work for CIA and report to the Blue Circle think tank guys.
