What’s a hod carrier? I also don’t understand misfortune about the bricks. Thanks in advance for telling me, whoever responds.

It was the mention of a spirit level that originally attracted him!

    I’m guessing a wheelbarrow.

It’s a tool designed for carrying bricks over one’s shoulder while ascending a ladder. As you can imagine, it’s pretty light until some fool loads it with bricks.

A hod carrier is the person who does the heavy lifting for the person in charge of laying the brick.

Andy is a few bricks shy of a load himself.

A hod is a 3-sided box, usually mounted on a long pole and carried over the shoulder. Used in the building industry for carrying bricks and/or mortar.
Wikipedia has an excellent explanation at:

I don’t think he recognized my voice. But he recognizes his mom’s on the phone. He was ready for his milk and a nap. But he wasn’t fussy.

Anybody else reminded of Walt Stack, the Legend of Dipsea?
. . . He carried Sand and likely lots of other stuff.
