Love your choice of ‘classics’ – particularly cartoons 3 & 4. They are an example of Reg’s work during the 70’s and by then he’d perfected his whole style. The images of Andy and Flo are so beautifully proportioned and almost come over as animated.

That is the era I grew up in, when I fell in love with Reg Smythe’s artwork and wit and Jon Pertwee was starring in ‘Doctor Who’.

In comparison, I dread to think what Reg would think of the ‘wit’ and artwork in today’s cartoon.

Although I’d like to think he’d be flattered and proud that his legacy lives on.

Reg perfected his style as early as the mid sixties and apart from dropping the ubiquitous ciggy from Andy’s lower lip, it hardly changed throughout the rest of his career.

“The top cartoon swiped one of Groucho’s lines from A NIGHT AT THE OPERA.”

Thank you for that insight into a credible influence of *Reg Smythe’s work!

Talking about Mr Pertwee: I was working at the Theatre Royal, Bath when he was in Panto (Cinderella). I was walking in the city centre in the rain and he stopped and offerd me a lift in his green Bertone. Just goes to show that cast members do recognise stage hands.

Marvelous story! And it doesn’t surprise me one bit.

Jon came over as a gentleman both on and off the screen!
