    I used to work for a tourist boat ride that used a pair of mules walking along a towpath that pulled a rope which towed the barge. I could be the captain at the back of the boat 100’ (30 meters) behind the mules, see one lift its tail, and smell the gas about 5 seconds later. I even once heard some elementary school-age boys on the barge make comments about the stench of mule gas – it was worse than dog or cat flatulence!
