Alternate Alley Oop Chapter 15 “House of the Worm”(46) 9/15/12

    Panel One

Alley uses his club on the balls of light but to little avail. When he connected they splattered into quickly evaportating ectoplasm. Some of it still glowed as it faded away.

    Panel Two

Lavainge felt like she was blasting through a long tunnel till she erupted into the dreamworld. It was dark and gloomy with her feet in water to her calves and rank sharp edged grasses all around, the trees hung over with boughs like knarled hands reach for her and the caw and twerp of birds in the trees and other less hoperful sounds came from further away in the mist that hangs all around.

    Panel Three

Several low suculent-like plants of a dull mauve color whip out at her attempting to grab her, she thought she needed a knife and it was in her coat pocket and she takes it out and bats the tentacle-leaves away cutting them and they made mewling sounds and bled greenish ichor as they trembled. Lavainge moved on, her extra long Resine Bowie knife felt good in her hands. Where did she last see Dr. Tucker?

    Panel Four

She is thinking furiously as to what to do when she reaches him. He was in a bad state and the horrors were surrounding him.

The one good thing in today’s strip? Seeing Alley Oop dressed like a Pitz player.

Yeah, at least the Bender’s are making some effort.

We are so accustomed to Bender-hell-U-broker’s anemic efforts that we congratulate him for making an effort.

And why didn’t the coach let Alley practice in Uniform? I bet Alley takes off the Uniform part-way through the game because it is so bulky ala David and Goliath, and wins the game by shooting the ball through the ring.

Oop and Ichik get ready for Carnaval.
Meanwhile, back at the temple, Ooola is too strung out on chocolate to remember where she is.

Shouldn’t Doc have missed him by now and begun searching for him?

Probably not. Even though it feels like an eternity since this nonsense started, in Bender time, it’s only been a week.

Good morning Benders and all The long anticipated Pitz is about to begin and Alley is decked out in the Mayan finest. Let’s hope that he remembers all of the rules – there were many – and keeps his cool. Alley grabbed his axe to show that he is ready to do battle

that silly head-dress does not look like much protection, especially for the face. it’s just…..silly.
what’s the over-under on how long the game will last, assuming of course it ever begins?

I just had to go back and read the Wikipedia article on Pitz. The headdress was used in rituals surrounding the game and likely not in the game itself. That’s pretty obvious from looking at Jack’s depiction as there is no way that this could stay on a head in an athletic event. Helmets were worn to protect the head. In the Mayan version of the game, players wore a kneepad on the right knee only and the right forearm was wrapped. Players also wore gloves.

I also wondered about the ring which apparently is Oop’s only hope for winning a game that he couldn’t possibly understand. The rings were an innovation that were added some time several centuries after the timeline of this story. They were also 6 meters, or about 19 feet off the ground, meaning that Oop’s dunk the other day was the highest jump by a human ever. To put this in perspective the world high jump record is less that half of that height. You can see why the ball going through the ring was nearly impossible. I know this is just a comic strip, but there is no way a guy playing his first Pitz game could get the ball through the ring.
