Tony Cochran’s Agnes is a whimsical look at childhood through the eyes of the title character and her best friend, Trout. What sets this strip apart is the focus on that limbo just before little girls discover boys and appropriate social skills.

Nothing wrong with being an expert on phonics, Agnes.

Phonics, very useful for teaching the very young, but not the older children.

Would “Hooked on Phoenix” teach you how to rise from your own ashes?

I once heard a quote, I believe it was from Vince Lombardi, he said it’s not the number of times you get knocked down that counts, it’s the number of times you get back up. That seems to be true of the Pheonix as well. while it is known for burning, it seems it is better known for rising back up from the ashes.

Phonics is a wunnerful concept because so much of our written language follows certain rules which make learning to spell much easier. Even the parts which don’t fit are easier because we have more time to spend learning the exceptions to the phonics rules.
-
We really need to redo our written language, though, so more of it fits the simple rules. It won’t happen because we have so many homonyms in the English language.
(Still, we should be gr8ful 2 the texters (bless their calloused thumbs) who are trying so hard 2 develop 1 for the rest of us. If only we could stomach it….)
