It’s actually $8 and 33 and a 1/3¢ per hour, but for casual conversation $8 per hour will do.
.
The math, using the $8.33…, says that the tax rate Adam and Laura pay on their (presumably) combined income is just under 35.9%.
.
If Basset and Harrell are remotely accurate with their tax-rate-mathematics, then the rumours of “lower American tax rates” on this side of the border are untrue.
.
Going to the Federal tax rates of the Canada Revenue Agency someone earning $135,054.00 will pay a combined tax rate of just over 21.1% and 26% on any dollar earned over $135.054.00. (I’m too tired to figure adding in the provincial rates, but even between 26% and 35.8 something % there’s a big spread.
.
But this is, after all a comic strip, and Basset and Harrell
probably make better cartoonists than tax accountants. (I just do the math, I’m not a tax accountant either.)

Adam works from home and cares for the baby. I’m not sure exactly what he does but it’s on the computer.

That’s slightly above minimum wage in NY.

Saw on a program the other day that the average pay for a baby sitter in NYC is $12.50/hour. Told my boss about it, he just grunted. Here in the midwest, $10/hour is not great, but it is a living wage.
