Now a days that won’t even buy skates, probably not even a good used pair. My son played goal and his hockey bag was worth $3000 15 years ago. I’d be lucky if I could get away under $6000.

Clean up crew? Did he faint and hockey* at the same time?
*If you live in the South Carolina low country, the term “hockey” (as in “horse hockey”) means to “poop” therefore, it’s a play on words.

it’s only expensive if you play in an organized league which requires you to wear all that expensive equipment in order to play. (not to mention registration fees for all that expensive arena ice.) if you can find a frozen pond, and don’t mind the odd bumps and bruises, you can play a bit of shinny for a lot less. unfortunately, that sort of “unstructured” play seems to have gone the way of the Winnipeg Jets - which is to say, disappeared.

The gear and registration is the small stuff. The unseen travel costs are what really hurt. Depending on where you live and the league, assume $ .50 per mile to drive ( that’s actually cheap ) an away game an hour and a half away is $100 right there. You’re gone most of the day so a meal has to be provided. We always did it as father son, but a family of four is that much more. Some families packed a snack, but most stopped at Mikey Ds or such. The home team usually charges admission. Four to six tournaments a year, with the hotel bill and food. Of course you don’t stay at the local flea bag but a nice place with a pool. A season of travel hockey is $20,000 cash minimum. And to top it off, the kid doesn’t have time to play the best game of all - road hockey 11

Sports should be simple and fun, the way yyyguy describes.
I’m one of those rare men who doesn’t care for sports, and I still think it’s sad that expenses can keep a kid from playing a game.

I learned to skate with hockey skates. When I eventually bought a pair of figure skates, it was amazing how good I had become. Hockey skates are much more difficult to master than figure skates.

Is it worth it?
I ask you: is it worth it?
IMHO–NO!!

I just can’t take the gawshawful artwork or lettering any more. I’m removing this strip from my viewing list. I don’t care if Brian is still doing the writing, the clumsy visual effect destroys it.

cleokaya Try speed skates, no ankle support, can’t turn, have to sharpen after every race, blades are usually offset and not always straight ahead. Some bend the blades for the corners.
Susan, I spent what amounted to a full time job on the side looking after the kids sports. On a hard balance sheet no, but what it did for them as they say ” PRICELESS”
