Mars, man. Mars…
I watched a video of the crew at Mission Control. I saw renderings of the rover’s design back before it launched. But it took a PHOTO for me to have a holy macaroni moment about the Curiosity experience. Seeing this just blew my mind all over again. I imagined first I was back in the days of the Greeks, sitting on hilltop, looking up at the night sky and struggling with the possibility that these points of light were other bodies floating above the air. I then imagined I was looking at them through one of the first telescopes and being flabbergasted to find it was so. Then I imagined being in the last century or so, reading science fiction stories and wondering what the surface of these places, like The Red Planet, might look like. Then I realized, wowsers, I live in this amazing moment when we can see the actual surface of what is another world—literally, another world—and that’s just incredible. That is insanely unique to any other time in the history of all life on this planet. Really, it is amazing.
We do some terrible things as a species—-they don’t even need to be listed because we all know them all too well. But when we do good things, when we do great things, that’s what really makes us lovable as lifeforms, despite our flaws. And in our collective desire to learn more—not to conquer, not to convert, not to destroy—in our quest to to know, we are going places that no other species from this world has ever been close to exploring. It simply thrills me—to be so fortunate to be alive at the beginnings—witnessing the stuff only once found in the dreams of the now long dead. How crazy cool is that?!

Very cool. Is the Dr Who homage to K9 intentional or not?

I have two favorite famous dogs. Toto from MGM’s The Wizard Of Oz and K-9. This was my Martian combination of the two. Good eye, PWB!
