The Academia Waltz was Berke Breathed's first cartoon, published daily from 1978 to 1979 in The Daily Texan at The University of Texas at Austin, where he was a student. The strip focused primarily on college life, although it sometimes made references to big news stories of the time (such as the incident at Three Mile Island in 1979).

For everyone who replied yesterday (Omnius, neatslob, Redkaycei Repoc)…
The kids I T.A. have grown up speaking English all their lives and get more cash as an allowance per week than their servants make as salary per month. They are not “just learning” English, they have known it all their lives, and have spent their lives in the most expensive English-medium schools in Delhi, which in theory is meant to provide them a complete education. However, I see on a daily basis that they are unable to attempt assignments that are normally given to and excelled at by TEN-YEAR-OLDS. THAT is through complete and utter stupidity and schooldays spent discovering sex, drugs, and alcohol, and parents bribing teachers to let them pass. (Why else do you think my university made me, a first-year, a T.A. right off the cuff? Every teacher has said I’m a hundred times smarter and more capable than the kids: the Dean herself said I’m on the same level as the teachers. And my university has just about all of the finest minds in Delhi.)

You claim not to be an English major but I’m not even certain you fully understand English. Check all your facts before attempting to criticise someone, it could prove less embarrassing. None of your criticisms of tense was correct in a grammatical sense. Apart from my not having closed the parentheses or deleted the superfluous “to”, after amending the sentence. As my comment was typed at two o’clock in the morning, even an English teacher is permitted a couple of omissions. What’s your excuse? Perhaps you should lighten up and be less pedantic.

Karl – you’re an idiot who just can’t seem to know when it’s time to just shut up. Being a teaching assistant is nothing to brag about, get back to me when you’re a professor. Talking down at your kids here is the mark of a jerk with no social graces or manners. If you haven’t wasted some time on sex, drugs and rock’n’roll then those kids you’re whining about doing so makes you a hundred times dumber than they are.
If I had to judge your university, wait it’s not your university dim bulb – poor semantics on your part. As I was saying if I were to judge that Delhi university where you participate then I’d judge it very harshly.
Give your students a break and never, ever diss them in public! I’d say you are in the wrong profession, you do not have the patience and understanding a teacher needs to have in order to reach the kids where you assist real teachers.

I do not doubt your intelligence, or capability at all, I merely observe that what you claimed on several days were misspellings were not misspellings but a main part of the strips joke. I remarked that you were told this after the very first time but you continued to call them misspellings, and in a rather condescending manner. I fail to see what a joke in an American strip has to do with your teaching in India and people who have trouble spelling when it is in no way related. You ranting about misspellings that are not misspellings but rather a deliberate joke does not reflect well upon you but rather the opposite. Respectfully yours….
