    I get it, it’s easy to see. A captain always remains with the ship hence… goes down with the ship. In this case the water wasn’t deep enough that he went below the surface and didn’t drown.

    The Captain always goes down with his ship and as a result he dies. Here the ship hit the bottom and he is still above the water and lives. Ergo, he lucks out!
